The Missouri Supreme Court unanimously ruled on Thursday that a new congressional map backed by President Donald Trump cannot be used in the November midterm elections. The court has ordered a statewide vote to determine whether to uphold or reject the redrawn boundaries.
The decision marks a setback for Republicans, who had engineered the map in hopes of picking up an additional House seat. This effort was intended to help the party maintain its narrow majority in the U.S. House.
President Trump assailed the ruling, which likely allows Democrats to retain a House seat they would have almost certainly otherwise lost. The decision could still be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
