Premier League champions Arsenal have confirmed the signing of 28-year-old Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United for a reported fee of £75 million. Guimarães has signed a four-year contract at the Emirates that includes a further one-year option.
Newcastle United sporting director Ross Wilson stated that the club did not plan to sell their captain, but the move proceeded after Guimarães became very emotional about his desire to join the club. Newcastle ultimately agreed to the reluctant sale.
Guimarães said he needed a new challenge in his life and is targeting trophies in north London. Describing his attributes, the midfielder noted that he can pass the ball, run a lot, and play like a warrior who will never give up.
Arsenal expect the Brazilian to provide creativity to an attack that has struggled to break down the low block. Furthermore, data suggests the signing could be a set-piece masterstroke for the team.
