Labour MPs have begun the process of selecting a replacement for Sir Keir Starmer following his resignation last month. Nominations are now open in the Labour Party election to determine who will lead the party and become Britain's next prime minister.

Former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has emerged as the frontrunner, with his path to the premiership appearing certain after a vast majority of Labour MPs formally nominated him. On the first day of nominations, 322 of 403 MPs backed Burnham.

Burnham currently remains unopposed in the race and could become prime minister this month. If he reaches at least 323 nominations, it would no longer be mathematically possible for another challenger to obtain the 81 signatures required to join the race out of the total of 402 Labour MPs.
