Israeli gunfire kills 2 in south Lebanon, testing fragile ceasefire

Israeli gunfire killed two people in the al-Deir neighbourhood of Nabatieh al-Fawqa in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, according to Lebanon's Civil Defence and health ministry.

The incident prompted Iran-backed Hezbollah to accuse Israel of violating a ceasefire that has largely held since Sunday. Despite the shooting, Israel and Hezbollah appeared to maintain a tense ceasefire for a second day.

The gunfire occurred a day after Israeli troops began operating under new orders intended to reduce the risk of flare-ups in the conflict with Hezbollah. These new military orders restrict troops to defensive actions.

The shooting took place after U.S.-Iranian talks in Switzerland, where the parties agreed to create a de-confliction cell to stop hostilities in Lebanon.
