Two-thirds of the population in the Gaza Strip are facing crisis levels of acute food insecurity, with 1.4 million people suffering from acute food shortages. Approximately 200,000 people are currently in danger of famine.
Due to funding shortages, the UN World Food Programme is being forced to make major cuts to its aid programme. The agency is reducing its monthly assistance from 1.6 million to 1.1 million people, leaving about 500,000 people without critical food support.
This situation persists despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire. Promised reconstruction has not begun, and with few jobs available, the vast majority of people in Gaza still rely on aid to eat. Residents are also reporting rising prices and restrictions that leave families unable to afford additional supplies.
The UN agency warns that these funding gaps threaten to reverse modest and fragile progress on food security. Furthermore, the upcoming winter is likely to deepen hunger for Palestinians in the territory.
