The US government has formally sought to join a legal challenge filed by Elon Musk to dismiss a fine imposed by the European Union on his social media platform, X. Federal officials have filed an application to intervene in the case to support the company's challenge against the penalty.
EU tech regulators fined X for breaching online content rules under the bloc's Digital Services Act, with the fine occurring late last year or late in 2025. The penalty, cited as €120 million, $136.5 million, or $140 million, follows accusations that the platform allowed deceptive behavior. Specifically, the EU stated that X deceives users by selling blue ticks without meaningfully verifying accounts.
