An explosion and fire broke out Friday at a Staten Island shipyard in New York City. Firefighters found a fire burning in the basement of a large metal structure at the dock around 3:30 p.m.
One civilian has died in the incident. Reports on the number of injuries vary, with one source stating 36 people were injured, many of whom were first responders, while other reports indicate 16 people were hurt, including 13 firefighters, two EMS personnel, and one civilian.
The emergency response followed reports of two workers trapped in a confined space at the dock. Two firefighters were reportedly injured while attempting to rescue the trapped civilians.
