Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is leaving prison to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest. Convicted for embezzlement in the 1MDB scandal, the country's biggest corruption case, Najib had spent more than four years in prison.

The transition follows the payment of a 50 million ringgit ($12.3 million) fine, which was raised through crowdfunding by his political party, UMNO. The party's solidarity fund successfully reached the target amount to secure the house arrest. Additionally, King Sultan Ibrahim granted Najib a conditional pardon in September.

Najib was seen leaving the Kajang Prison compound in a silver car. This move comes after the attorney general had previously noted that the transfer was temporarily on hold.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated that he will resign from the cabinet as soon as Najib Razak begins serving his sentence under house arrest.
