E. Jean Carroll seeks payment from Trump after Supreme Court rejects appeal

political figures legal proceedings

Advice columnist E. Jean Carroll asked a federal judge in Manhattan on Tuesday to mandate that Donald Trump pay her the funds owed from a jury verdict. Her lawyers have requested the release of $5.8 million after a jury found the president liable for sexually abusing Carroll in the 1990s and defaming her after she publicly described the attack in 2019.

The request follows a decision on Monday by the U.S. Supreme Court, which refused to hear Trump's appeal of the 2023 civil case verdict. Because the Supreme Court denied the request to review the verdict, the former Elle magazine writer is now seeking the funds that the president set aside as a deposit.

While Carroll seeks the payment, lawyers for Trump have asked for her consent to delay the $5 million awarded to her by the jury.
