Mexico approves amendment to annul elections over foreign interference

Mexico has approved a constitutional amendment that establishes foreign interference as a ground for annulling elections in the country. The measure was passed by both the lower house and the Senate.

The lower house initially approved the amendment with 307 votes in favor, 128 against, and one abstention. The reform defines foreign interference as the intervention of foreign governments or agencies, as well as illicit financing, propaganda, digital manipulation, and the systematic dissemination of misinformation.

President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that it is important to safeguard the territory from interference, while acknowledging the complexity of the issue and the necessity for the law to be specific and clear. Meanwhile, critics argue that the measure risks undermining the electoral process and creating new avenues for contesting results.
