Democrat Analilia Mejia won a special election on Thursday to fill the vacant U.S. House seat in New Jersey's 11th Congressional District. The seat was previously held by Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill.
Mejia, a former head of the Working Families Alliance who had support from Senator Bernie Sanders, defeated Republican Joe Hathaway. Her campaign focused on a message of standing up to Donald Trump.
The victory represents a win for progressives and means Democrats will maintain control of the 11th District seat. This occurs while Republicans hold a thin majority in the House. Mejia will serve in the position until January.
