The Swedish Academy in Stockholm awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature to Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson on Thursday. The Toronto-born author, 76, will receive 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately $1.2 million, alongside the prestigious honor.
The Nobel committee lauded Carson for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature. Because her body of work eschews easy categorization, Carson was among the bookies' favorites to win this year.
An acclaimed poet, classicist, and translator, Carson is known for works that often cross boundaries between poetry, fiction, and scholarship. Drawing from ancient Greek and Roman literature, her writing blends elements of these genres and is informed by a deep reverence for Latin and Greek classics. Among her genre-crossing works is Autobiography of Red.
