The United States government planned to establish a 50-bed Ebola quarantine facility on an air force base in central Kenya. This tented field hospital was intended to house and isolate American citizens who had been exposed to the virus during an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The proposal sparked a fierce backlash from medical workers in Kenya, particularly as the East African country has no confirmed cases of the virus.
On May 28, the Katiba Institute, a Kenyan rights group, went to court to challenge the plan.
A Kenyan high court judge has since blocked the government from approving the deal and halted the construction and operations of the facility.
