Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky traveled to London to meet with the leaders of Britain, France, and Germany, winning their support for direct ceasefire talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelensky indicated that these European leaders could serve as negotiators in the discussions.
The leaders of Britain, Germany, and France expressed support for the proposal to secure a ceasefire and stated that Europe would play a role in the process. French President Emmanuel Macron noted that the talks would focus on coordinating European support for Ukraine, increasing pressure on Russia, and efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace. European leaders have called on Putin to agree to an immediate and complete ceasefire to allow talks on a peace deal to begin.
However, Vladimir Putin stated that the offer did not come across as sincere and said he currently saw no point in meeting. These diplomatic efforts remain stalled as Russian strikes reportedly damaged a nuclear fuel storage facility near the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
