Meta Platforms has launched a new AI model, Muse Glimmer, designed for developers with an emphasis on open-source access. The model can be freely downloaded and modified, a move likely to intensify ongoing debates regarding whether artificial intelligence should be restricted.
In addition to Muse Glimmer, Meta announced on Monday that it will release the weights for its most powerful AI model, Muse Spark 1.2. By making this model open source, Meta is directly challenging competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg accompanied these releases with a video and an essay advocating for open-source AI. Zuckerberg argues that this approach is necessary for the United States to maintain leadership in AI, support its citizens, and effectively compete with China.
