EU accused of delay as ministers debate curbing trade with Israeli settlements

European Union foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels on Monday to explore whether there is sufficient support for new measures to curb or ban trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Pressure from member states to impose sanctions has increased in recent months amid escalating settler violence in the occupied West Bank, which has killed at least 235 children.

These discussions occur against an ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where a UN inquiry found Israel to be committing a genocide. Some countries have privately accused the European Commission of dragging its feet over upholding international law on the eve of this long-awaited debate.

While foreign ministers will discuss their options during the meeting, a final decision on imports is not expected for several months.
