A two-storey residential building in the historic Plaka district of central Athens collapsed in seconds on Friday morning following a powerful explosion. The blast occurred near major tourist sites, including the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus, sending rubble and broken glass up to three blocks away.
Six people were killed in the disaster, including four American tourists. Emergency teams discovered the victims more than 24 hours after the explosion. Additionally, one passerby was reported to be slightly injured.
The explosion damaged nearby houses, shops, and cars, leading to the evacuation of neighboring buildings. Athens Mayor Haris Doukas described the event as an incredible disaster and stated that a major gas leak is believed to have caused the blast.
Fire service, police, and medical crews remained at the scene. A team from the Arson Crimes Division is currently investigating the incident as Greek authorities work to determine the exact cause of the collapse.
