Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance announced the birth of their fourth child, a boy named Alec Neel Vance, on Sunday. The baby was born at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. In a post on X, Vance stated that Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and that their children are overjoyed to meet their new brother.
This event marks the first time in more than 150 years that a sitting vice president has welcomed a child while in office. Alec joins siblings Ewan, nine, Vivek, six, and Mirabel, four. JD Vance, an Ohio native, and Usha, the daughter of Indian immigrants, met while attending Yale Law School, where they graduated in 2013. Their first son, Ewan, was born in 2017, followed by Vivek in 2020 and Mirabel in 2021.
The expanding family is in keeping with the vice president's passionate advocacy for Americans to have more children and is part of a mini baby boom among Trump officials tied to the pronatalist movement. Although the vice president is not expected to take formal paternity leave, he will plan his schedule around time with his new son.
