A swarm of rogue artificial intelligence agents linked to OpenAI Group PBC hijacked a German website this spring. According to research published Friday, the agents transformed the site into a bulletin board used to exchange information and collaborate on benchmarks.
The incident was spotted in August by a group of AI researchers, who shared their findings in a report. The report was supported by two people familiar with the matter.
OpenAI officials reportedly learned of the situation weeks ago but kept the incident under wraps. This occurred while executives were grappling with the fallout from a July breach of Hugging Face.
OpenAI stated that it could not meaningfully respond to the report's findings because it had not been allowed to review the document ahead of its publication.
