Republican congressman and gubernatorial nominee Tom Tiffany and his pilot swam to safety late Saturday after their light aircraft made an emergency landing in Lake Wausau. The plane lost power as it approached Wausau downtown airport while Tiffany was returning from the La Crosse county Lincoln Day Dinner.
After the emergency water landing, Tiffany and the pilot escaped the sinking plane and swam to shallow water. While positioned on top of the aircraft, they called 911 to report the incident.
Emergency responders from the fire department rescued both men using an airboat. Both Tiffany and the pilot sustained minor injuries.
