North Korea has commissioned a new 5,000-ton destroyer called the Choe Hyon. Leader Kim Jong Un unveiled the vessel on Tuesday, describing it as a symbol of the country's growing naval and nuclear capabilities and marking a new era of naval power.
During the ceremony, Kim Jong Un called for the navy to be modernized and equipped with nuclear weapons, signaling a strategic shift in military capabilities. He stated that North Korea should build two warships as large as the Choe Hyon every year for the next five years to strengthen the Navy's combat capabilities.
The leader justified the expansion of nuclear forces and the naval buildup by citing U.S.-South Korea military cooperation, including efforts to push forward with South Korea's possession of a nuclear submarine. Kim asserted that this position is the only way to cope with an unpredictable and complicated global security situation.
While Kim has vowed to modernize his navy, questions remain whether the investment will ultimately prove worthwhile for the leader.
