Moscow has launched a record swarm of drones against infrastructure in central Ukraine. Simultaneously, Ukraine has resumed its attacks on Russian energy sites, with drones striking a refinery in the Ryazan region early Thursday.
These developments follow the collapse of a unilateral effort by U.S. President Donald Trump to negotiate an energy ceasefire. While Trump declared the agreement, neither Russia nor Ukraine stated they had agreed to the terms. Ukraine had previously paused its strikes to comply with U.S. demands, but President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that Kyiv will no longer abide by these demands.
In an interview with The Financial Times, President Zelenskyy expressed anger over what he described as a dangerous withdrawal of U.S. intelligence and support critical to Ukraine's defense. He specifically noted that his forces had been left without U.S. early-warning alerts for incoming ballistic missiles.
Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine's patience with the surprise ceasefire has run out after Moscow spurned the brief truce. Kyiv has now officially resumed its campaign of strikes against Russian oil refineries.
