Peter Murrell, the former chief executive of the Scottish National Party, has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison for theft. The estranged husband of former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon pleaded guilty to embezzling funds from the party.
Murrell managed the SNP's finances while his then-wife served as First Minister. He admitted to using the party's money to purchase a bizarre range of items.
Assistant chief constable Stuart Houston of Police Scotland stated that Murrell occupied a significant position of privilege and power in public life in Scotland.
