DR Congo defeated Uzbekistan 3-1 in Atlanta to secure their first-ever World Cup win and a spot in the knockout stage. Although Eldor Shomurodov gave Uzbekistan an early lead with a lob over Lionel Mpasi, Yoane Wissa equalized from the penalty spot and later scored a second goal. Fiston Mayele also scored to complete the comeback victory.
This victory marks the first time the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached the last 32 of the World Cup. With this result, nine of the ten African teams in the tournament have now advanced to the next round, joining South Africa, Morocco, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Cape Verde, Egypt, Algeria, and Ghana.
The Congolese side is scheduled to play England in the round of 32 on July 1. Following Saturday's dramatic win, coach Sebastien Desabre stated that preparations for the upcoming match against England would begin immediately.
