Activists aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla, who were attempting to deliver aid to Gaza, were detained by Israel in international waters. Among the 430 people detained, many were later shown in a video released by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir kneeling with their hands bound. In the footage, one activist was seen being pulled to the ground by her hair.
Organizers of the flotilla have accused the Israeli military and police of severe abuse during the activists' detention. These allegations include beatings, the use of rubber bullets at close range, and reports of tens of people suffering broken bones, resulting in several hospitalizations. Additionally, at least 15 individuals have reported sexual assaults, including rape. The Israeli prison service has strongly denied these claims.
The treatment of the detainees sparked an international outcry and a rebuke from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Several countries, including key allies, have condemned Israel's actions. Furthermore, multiple European countries are calling for EU sanctions against Minister Ben-Gvir.
The detained activists have since been released from prison. Officials stated that they are being deported to Turkey and their respective countries of origin.
