Supreme Court rules for Michigan in fight to shut down aging energy pipeline

environment legal proceedings

The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected a bid by the Canadian energy company Enbridge to change the venue of an environmental lawsuit brought by Michigan. The court ruled that the legal battle seeking to shut down a section of an aging pipeline beneath a Great Lakes channel will remain in state court.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote for a unanimous court, stating that Enbridge waited too long to attempt to move the case to federal court.

The justices sided with Michigan officials, who have raised environmental alarms and pushed to decommission the aging section of the oil pipeline located between two of the Great Lakes.
