SpaceXAI and Cursor unveil Opus-class Grok 4.5 to undercut OpenAI and Anthropic

technology artificial intelligence

SpaceXAI has launched Grok 4.5, its most capable model to date. Released on Wednesday, this marks the company's first major launch since going public and acquiring the AI coding startup Cursor.

Built in partnership with Cursor, the joint model is designed as a workhorse focusing on agentic work, coding, finance, and legal tasks rather than casual chat. Elon Musk has positioned the model as an Opus-class tool intended to compete against the frontier.

The release aims to gain ground on rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic PBC. An internal memo pits Grok 4.5 against OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 and Anthropic’s Opus 4.8. SpaceXAI claims the model is a more efficient alternative that dramatically undercuts its competitors on price.
