Australian spearfisher killed in shark attack at Great Barrier Reef

A 39-year-old man died on Sunday after a shark attack on the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. The man had been spearfishing with friends at Kennedy Shoal, a shallow reef located approximately 50km off the coast between Cairns and Townsville, when emergency services were alerted around midday.

The man was attacked while in the water and was pulled out by another person who was with him. Although he was rushed to shore after being bitten, he died shortly afterward.

This incident marks Australia's second fatal shark attack in just over a week. It follows the death of a 38-year-old man who was killed while spearfishing near an island off Perth in Western Australia one week prior.
