Chief Justice John Roberts has signed a temporary order allowing President Donald Trump to continue construction of his controversial White House ballroom. The Supreme Court's decision temporarily blocks a lower court injunction that would have forced a halt to aboveground construction.
The administrative stay provides the high court with more time to deliberate and weigh an emergency appeal filed by the Trump administration. This legal battle stems from a lawsuit challenging the project, which includes a sprawling military complex and a heavily fortified ballroom.
The ruling follows months of disputes between the administration and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. To make way for the planned ballroom, President Trump had the White House East Wing demolished in 2025. The stay will remain in place until the Supreme Court takes further action.
