Hawaii is facing its third hurricane threat of the year as Hurricane Nolo approaches. Residents on the Big Island are bracing for potentially life-threatening and catastrophic flooding, intense rain of up to 25 inches, and dangerous surf. Forecasters warn that the storm could unleash life-threatening flash flooding.
Nolo is forecast to strengthen into a major hurricane on Saturday. While it is predicted to pass well south of the islands and move west, it is still expected to cause catastrophic downpours and large waves along the coast. In preparation, the state has closed schools and activated more than 230 Hawaii National Guard members, particularly as communities are still recovering from extreme weather earlier this summer.
Simultaneously, Mexico is under the threat of Hurricane Polo. After bringing storm conditions to the southwestern coast, Polo continues to gain significant force as it heads toward the Baja Peninsula, leaving southwestern communities bracing for the storm.
