Jharkhand students protest alleged exam irregularities as police use tear gas

Students in Ranchi, the capital of India's eastern state of Jharkhand, are marching on the state assembly to demand transparency and a probe into alleged irregularities in civil service recruitment exams. The demonstrators are calling for an overhaul of the state's examination system and the scrapping of exams administered by a private testing company they accuse of irregularities.

The protests, which began on July 29, were inspired by a youth-led cockroach movement in New Delhi. While demonstrations in the capital have subsided following the resignation of the national education minister, the momentum has continued in Jharkhand.

Now entering their third week, the protests have seen several students go on hunger strike. Police have used force to disperse students attempting to march toward the state assembly.
