England midfielder Jordan Henderson will be sidelined for the remainder of the World Cup after suffering a serious wrist injury. The 36-year-old former Liverpool captain and current Brentford midfielder was injured during celebrations following England's 3-2 last-16 victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.
The freak injury occurred when Henderson slipped and fell over an advertising board and barrier. Video footage showed his forearm buckling as he landed awkwardly. He was taken from the field on a stretcher and received oxygen before being transported to a hospital in Mexico City.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel described the injury as really bad, and it has been confirmed that Henderson broke his wrist and requires surgery. Although he was an unused substitute against Mexico, Henderson is among the squad's most respected figures, providing leadership, experience, and a calming influence.
Henderson did not travel back to the squad's training base in Kansas City, though a member of England's medical staff stayed behind with him. The Football Association has not officially commented on Henderson's participation in the rest of the tournament.
