South African midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25. His passing was confirmed on Saturday by Gayton McKenzie, the minister of sport, arts and culture, and the South African Football Players Union. While the cause of death has not yet been confirmed, police have opened an investigation after Adams' body was found in a suburb of central Cape Town.
Adams recently represented Bafana Bafana at the 2026 World Cup, where he featured in all three group stage matches. He started fixtures against Mexico and the Czech Republic and came off the bench in a 1-0 victory over South Korea, helping South Africa reach the knockout rounds for the first time in its history. In the match against the Czech Republic, Adams played only hours after learning of his grandmother's death. South Africa was later defeated by Canada in the last-32 round.
A former player for Stellenbosch, Adams joined the Pretoria-based Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025 and helped the club win the African Champions League title during the 2025/26 season. On the international stage, he earned 13 caps since his 2022 debut against Mozambique and scored two goals during the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
Tributes have poured in from across the nation, including condolences from President Cyril Ramaphosa and the South African Federation of Trade Unions. Minister McKenzie described Adams as one of the nation's brightest young talents, while the South African Football Players Union praised his humility and extraordinary talent, calling him a proud servant of the game.
