An Israeli air strike killed Mohammad al-Waheidi, a senior Palestinian member of Egypt's main aid organization, on Tuesday evening. Al-Waheidi, who organized World Cup screenings in the Gaza Strip, was killed when a missile struck the taxi he was in shortly before a match between Egypt and Argentina.
Three other people were killed in the attack, including a man near the site and two siblings aged 8 and 10. The blast turned what was intended to be a celebration of a potential Argentina upset by an Arab team into a deadly reminder. Following the event, Gazans turned out in large numbers to pay their respects to al-Waheidi.
The Israeli military stated it had struck a Hamas militant but acknowledged reports that uninvolved civilians were harmed. Amidst these events, the coach of Team Egypt spotlighted the plight of the Palestinian people during press briefings and on the pitch.
