Hurricane Lala grazed Hawaii's Big Island without making landfall before weakening to a tropical storm on Sunday. Despite avoiding a direct hit, the storm brought hurricane-force winds and torrential rain, leading the state to declare a state of emergency.
Governor Josh Green reported that at least one person died in a car accident in the South Point area of the Big Island. The storm's impact included the loss of 19 roofs and the postponement of 190 flights. Power outages affected between 60,000 and 130,000 households, forcing three hospitals to switch to generator power.
The National Hurricane Center warned of life-threatening flooding and mudslides, with predictions of up to 25 inches of rain on the Big Island. As the storm moves west, tropical storm conditions have spread toward Oahu and Kauai, and warnings remain in effect for Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Kauai, and Niihau. Authorities continue to urge residents to shelter in place.
