The death toll from two earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 4,490, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez announced on Sunday.

Thousands of Venezuelans remain displaced, forced into crowded shelters or to sleep outdoors. Those affected are currently grappling with a severe lack of clean water.

Camps for families left homeless have sprung up in stadiums, plazas, and on sidewalks in La Guaira as well as nearby Caracas. Authorities are now planning to set up temporary housing to shelter the thousands of people left homeless as the official death toll continues to rise.
