Australian forward Cristian Volpato allegedly tested positive for cocaine during a roadside test after being stopped for speeding in Sydney on Friday. The 22-year-old was stopped twice on Anzac Bridge around 1:10 a.m. while driving a BMW Coupe at 109 kph in a 60 kph zone, which was nearly 50 kph over the designated limit.
New South Wales Police issued Volpato an infringement notice for speeding and suspended his international driver's license for six months. Police stated they are continuing inquiries into the matter.
Volpato, who plays in Italy's Serie A for Sassuolo, previously represented Italy at junior levels before switching his allegiance to Australia ahead of the 2026 World Cup. He was considered a breakout star during the tournament, where he made three appearances for the Socceroos.
Football Australia confirmed it is aware of the allegations and is monitoring the situation to support the player. The players union, Professional Footballers Australia, also stated they are aware of the reports and will ensure Volpato is supported. Volpato's management and Sassuolo have not provided immediate comment.
