Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow kills two during Russian elections

Russia experienced one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks on the Moscow region and its capital during the final day of parliamentary elections. The Moscow mayor described the wave of drones as an unprecedented and the largest ever attack on the city, accusing Ukraine of attempting to disrupt the polls and interfere with the election.

Authorities reported that more than 1,600 drones were intercepted and shot down in total, with 450 of those targeting Moscow. The attacks caused damage to a residential building and the Moscow Oil Refinery. In the wider Moscow region, the strikes killed a 74-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, and wounded 20 other people.

Ukraine stated that the attacks, which also targeted other areas of Russia, involved the use of a newly developed ballistic missile. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian air force reported that Russian forces fired 174 drones and two Zircon missiles at Ukraine overnight, resulting in at least four deaths in the Kyiv region.

The attacks occurred as voters cast ballots for Russia's parliament. The ruling United Russia party, which supports President Vladimir Putin, has won every parliamentary election in the country since 2003.
