Super Typhoon Sinlaku Threatens US Islands in Pacific

meteorology natural disasters

Super Typhoon Sinlaku is approaching the Mariana Islands, including Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, bringing a risk of destructive winds, flooding, and dangerous seas. The storm rapidly strengthened from a cluster of thunderstorms into a typhoon over the weekend.

Sinlaku is forecast to impact Tinian and Saipan with strong winds and heavy rain, prompting shelter-in-place orders for residents. While slowing and weakening, the system is still expected to bring dangerous conditions to the region, with winds potentially reaching up to 175 mph.

US military personnel have been instructed to prepare for the storm and shelter in place as Sinlaku crosses the island chain. The system was expected to make landfall Tuesday evening.
