A vehicle attack occurred late on Saturday, July 25, near Berlin's Pride celebration in Tiergarten park near the Brandenburg Gate. The attack killed a 65-year-old Polish woman and injured 31 people.
German prosecutors stated on Tuesday that a video found on the phone of the suspect, 21-year-old German citizen Abdul Ballout, contains a pledge of allegiance to the militant group Islamic State. Although the person in the video was masked, authorities assume it shows Ballout, who was shot dead by police on Sunday.
Ballout had been convicted and sentenced to jail in May for preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state, but he had been freed under the supervision of a probation officer. Following the attack, Germany's interior minister announced a security overhaul on Monday amid an angry debate over why the suspect was not in prison.
