At least 35 people were killed and approximately 30 others were injured on Saturday following a collision between two passenger buses on a highway linking the Syrian capital, Damascus, with the eastern province of Deir el-Zour.
The accident occurred in the center of the country on a desert highway notorious for deadly accidents. The collision involved a civilian passenger bus and a bus carrying members of the Internal Security Forces.
A large-scale rescue operation was launched at the scene, which included the deployment of Syrian military helicopters. The cause of the collision was not immediately known.
