Violent nationwide protests rocked France over the weekend, resulting in town halls being burned down and hundreds of businesses looted or damaged. At least 2,400 people were arrested following the unrest.

French President Emmanuel Macron slammed the security failures that he said led to the violent protests.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez submitted his resignation on Sunday, but President Macron refused it. The Élysée announced that the refusal was based on the need for continuous command of the security forces to ensure order within the police and security forces.

The president has instead instructed Nunez to put in place new operational methods for security forces to handle the crisis.
