Wildfires in Portugal, Greece and Spain; toxic smoke and evacuations in Greece

environment natural disasters

Hundreds of firefighters are battling wildfires across Portugal and Greece amid intense heat. Some blazes have been burning for several days, with one massive fire continuing for more than three days. To assist in containment efforts, Spain and Italy have sent reinforcements.

In Greece's second largest city, Thessaloniki, a fast-moving wildfire has broken out. The blaze spread rapidly, prompting authorities to order evacuations for residents in three small suburbs north of the city.

Authorities have also warned of toxic smoke after a recycling plant was engulfed by the fire. Residents in parts of Thessaloniki have been urged to remain indoors and shut their windows and doors.
