Two workers at Frankfurt Airport, Germany's largest airport, have died of malaria. According to German health officials and the airport's operator, six employees were infected this summer, with four of them recovering.
The outbreak has been attributed to a mosquito that likely entered an aircraft and traveled from a malaria-endemic area to Germany in July. Malaria is caused by parasites spread via Anopheles mosquitoes.
Symptoms of the disease include nausea, headache, and intense waves of fever and chills. In response, mosquito traps have been set up at the airport and a monitoring process is underway.
