Somali soccer referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan was denied entry into the United States prior to the start of the World Cup. Artan had been scheduled to officiate matches during the tournament.

Border officials refused his entry into the country, citing concerns regarding his association with suspected members of terror organizations.

Despite being unable to attend the tournament, FIFA will pay Artan his full tournament fee and salary for his match assignments.
