Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has responded to a growing political crisis stemming from allegations of fraud involving EU agricultural funds. Describing the revelations as “a turning point,” Mitsotakis vowed to tackle what he called a “deep state” and root out entrenched corruption within the country.
The scandal, involving at least €23 million in alleged fraudulent farm subsidies, has prompted the resignation of multiple government ministers and is under investigation by EU prosecutors. Mitsotakis has urged prosecutors to swiftly decide whether to indict lawmakers from his New Democracy party.
Nine of eleven lawmakers submitted written statements to a parliamentary committee, while former Rural Development Minister Kostas Tsiaras and MP Notis Mitarakis appeared in person to address the claims. The probe involves ‘numerous’ members of the ruling party.
Mitsotakis has characterized the situation as a catalyst for increased commitment to transparency and accountability, seeking to limit the political damage caused by the unfolding events.
