A rare celestial event is occurring this Wednesday evening as a total solar eclipse brings darkness to parts of the world. This event, where the moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, will cause day to briefly turn to night across parts of northern Spain. Millions of other observers across Europe, Canada, the northern United States, and northwest Africa will witness a partial eclipse.
Maximum totality is expected to occur off the west coast of Iceland. The eclipse will then move across a small patch of Portugal before reaching massive crowds in Spain, where totality will have dwindled to approximately one minute. The spectacle is set to conclude in the Mediterranean.
Sky watchers have flocked to locations from Iceland to Spain to view the moon completely blocking the sun. This event marks the first total eclipse in mainland Europe since 2006 and the first in mainland Spain since 1900.
