The U.S. Senate unanimously approved a bipartisan resolution on Thursday implementing an immediate prohibition on incumbent senators, staff, and other officers from using prediction markets. These platforms, which allow people to place bets on real-world future events such as election results, have recently gained increased scrutiny.
The vote follows a case in which a U.S. special forces soldier was charged with using classified information to bet on the January capture of Venezuela's then-president, Nicolas Maduro.
During the process, one senator decried the practice as blatant, brazen corruption and expressed a desire to target the Trump administration next.
