Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump shook hands and smiled on the sidelines of a Group of Seven summit in France. This marked their first in-person meeting in more than a year.

The bilateral meeting took place on June 17 and was expected to be brief. It was viewed as unlikely to produce any major announcements.

President Trump praised Prime Minister Modi, describing him as a loyal friend despite tensions concerning oil sanctions and trade. Trump also pledged to defend India, provided that Narendra Modi remains the leader.
