Spain has recorded its deadliest June for heat mortality following record-breaking temperatures that scorched Europe. The country's meteorological agency, Aemet, described the month as extremely hot and the second-warmest since 1961, marking the hottest January-to-June period on record.
Official data showed 1,029 excess deaths last month attributable to heat, though the MoMo monitoring system estimated nearly 900 deaths. These figures more than doubled the 407 heat-related deaths recorded in June of last year.
The conditions were marked by a five-day heatwave with temperatures surpassing 40 degrees Celsius. Scientists stated that the extreme heat across Europe was driven by climate change.
